Top 5 Magnesium Foods
By William Jaffee
Almost every week a new study comes out linking increased dietary magnesium to healthier hearts, resistance to diabetes, mental fitness, less risk of cancer...virtually anything you can think of. The thing is, magnesium supplements are not the best way to go. At best, they don't show the same health results as magnesium from foods does. (For example, the effectiveness in stopping the onset of Type II diabetes is only found in food-sourced magnesium, not supplements). At worst, you can actually overdose on supplements, and they can be a real threat to your health. So here's a safe way to boost your body and mind: 1- Chocolate! OK, so maybe it's not the healthiest food on the list, but cocoa powder is super rich in magnesium. So, the next time you want to binge, buy some dark chocolate that has the highest cocoa concentration you can find (go for at least 70%). 2- Pumpkin seeds One ounce of these, 142 seeds, will give you 151mg of magnesium, over a third of your daily requirement. These are the next easiest thing to supplements. Just think of one pumpkin seed as a little over 1mg of magnesium.Just like a mini-vitamin. Snack away... 3- Almonds These offer a little more than half what pumpkin seeds do in terms of magnesium. But they are three times the size, and can be coated with chocolate. So now you can think of chocolate covered almonds as your magnesium vitamins. Well, you could if it weren't for the sugar... 4- Halibut Halibut kicks butt in the magnesium rankings. A 3 ounce portion packs 91 mg of magnesium. But you already knew fish was healthy. 5- Spinach A cup of cooked spinach (or a can, if you're Popeye) brings in around 160 mg of magnesium. Terrifically easy to eat, and healthy in so many other ways. Nuts, grains, tofu, soybeans, raw broccoli, cornmeal, buckwheat...all too many to mention here. The point is, magnesium is widely available. Statistically speaking, I can safely bet money that you're not getting enough. So try the foods above and get caught up!
I have followed food from the planted seed in Mongolia to the full plant, to the shipping overseas, to the processing with frozen foods, to the supermarket shelf, and to the table. I want to help people eat well, and enjoy what they eat.
